And yeah, I know what you mean. Those kinds of stories are pretty.... well, you know. Bleh. And something like this could be really cool. Post-apocalyptic fiction centred around First Nations characters probably already exists (I haven't read any though, do you know of any?) but it isn't something that shows up in fanfic much.
The location really is a perfect place to survive SSSS plague and monsters: isolated, hard to get to, long and cold winters, short summers. And like you said, populations used to being self-sufficient. So I hope that I'll eventually get this idea to take shape - hopefully when the library opens up next week, I'll be able to start on the research.
