I've heard some people say that the comic starts too slowly for their tastes... I find that it suits me perfectly, but what I generally tell people is "Stick through to the end of chapter 3, then see how you feel about it". It's a lot of comic to get through, but to me it seems like a good place for it, because this is where we get the first real taste of just what creepiness is out there, rather than it existing as some kind of unknown looming threat.

Anyway. This sure is the chapter that solidified my Emil/Lalli shipping. That "good night" scene was way too cute. But also: Sleep!

Also, this chapter has Agneta, one of my favourite one-off characters. :D I just - I don't know, it's like the prologue folks, it only takes a few pages to get me attached to somebody. (Also, she has really cool hair) ** "A highly unusual degree of inconvenience"... is that what you call it?* On my list of Stuff To Write is some worldbuildy stuff involving her and the other people working on the Dalahästen train... some day, some day.

I really like Agneta too. And it's great that she happens to have a name, unlike a lot of minor characters. I think it's easier to get attached to a character if their name somehow speaks to me.

:)a Yeah, a name definitely helps. ...And I will confess that I feel less weird about falling in love with minor characters when they actually have names.

:D Yes, that. Getting ahead of chapters, but I really wish Reynir's sisters had names...

(Though I also meant that among several characters who all have names, I might a bit more easily latch onto the one whose name I like or that feels particularly fitting for the character)

- 145: I didn't even notice the scratches on the hull until someone pointed them out. Goddamn that's ominous.

- 155: On a side note, the first time I ever saw the "good night" exchange panels without context on tumblr, long before ever reading the comic and only ever knowing it was set in post-apocalyptic Scandinavia, I had read into it that Lalli was some mysterious Finnish survivor they had found in the ruins of stuff. And, like, Fifth-Element-style, he was going to be the key to some big world-saving power or something. Fandoms without context really are just the best.

- 157-158 are such a set of wham pages.

- 159, 160: And how quickly Emil and Lalli just clicked as friends. God, Emil wishes he were half the pompous prick he likes to pretend he is. I love how Lalli just gets progressively more and more confused by the pantomime.

- 164-166: Probably my favorite pages in this whole comic.

- 170: See, times like this, I see the whole thing about Emil being a pretty boy. Bad haircut or no.

God, I love this chapter. Agneta is awesome, the crew is great, it's so skillfully paced and gives you such a good look at who the characters are with their guard down. Emil trying to protect a new friend, Lalli trying to prevent a disaster at all costs, the grit of the train crew. It really sets the tone for just how horrific things are through such deft allusions. And a giant.

Yeah, it's so carefully thought-out! Gotta admire the storytelling. ♥

There's so much blue colour in this chapter! And there's magic and techy train interiors.

155, 157 - I LOVE how after the moon spell and everything we're reminded again that this is not a mythical past, this is a grim future. :3 157 is actually one of my favourite pages. So is the moon spell, but... that boring block-of-flats with a balcony full of troll suddenly makes it clear that this is the real world with real monsters, but still it's such a subtle page.

156 - hadn't noticed those pictures that are supposedly from the accident before.

Emil & Lalli are adorable but I don't actually remember what was my take on them during ch. 3 on first read. Probably I was too busy binge-reading at that time. And waiting to see trolls, apparently.

o_o Oh man I didn't see those either. I don't know how I missed that, those pictures are SO CREEPY.
