It's gotta be Scandinavian style, else Tuuri would have known the procedure. She works at a military base. If Finns did the same as the Scands she would know that the base sends help if it promises to, even if contact to the team on the field is lost.

I would even suggest it's mostly a Norwegian/Swedish way of handling this sort of situation, just going by how the different nations deal with trouble in general. Icelanders don't have much to worry about, they don't exactly get into the Silent World. The Danes were so unprepared for what waited for them, that I'm thinking they didn't do much borking around in the Silent World previously, but just got their tanks out and thought that was enough.

Norwegians and Swedes are the people who go get their hands dirty deliberately, and unlike Finns they might have only radio for contacting the base; the base can therefore never be 100% certain that a lost contact means a lost team, so they have to play it safe.

I found an interesting tidbit lately saying that the Icelanders don't exactly have much field experience on land - their military consists of seafaring hunters. In that case, losing contact in the field probably means that ship got sunk by a whale, not much point going to pick up surivors especially since that's the North Atlantic we're talking about, probably not much point considering water temperatures.

And the Danes - don't have much of a military left to speak of after their continued defeats, so it strikes me as unlikely that Sigrun even knows about whatever shape their protocol takes, unless Mikkel divulged some information. It'd be interesting to see her and Mikkel clash over this, if she were less sick - perhaps Taru and Trond instead, over Finnish vs. Norwegian tactics? And Taru says early on that she worked with Swedes in the cleansing of the Pori area, so she ought to be familiar with their way of conducting operations.

Aaaah, I want soooo much backstory fic for Sigrun out of this, though. It could slot quite nicely with the ambush that she mentioned, losing contact and hanging on until help comes. While at least two people die.

Bonus visual parallels, look at her posture and expression!

Icelanders also have what Finns have, a more or less reliable way of contacting the base - mages ind reaming. Finns are only capable of it within certain distance limits, Icelanders cover a larger space. So indeed, if that connection is lost it means the mage is out of the game and most likely the team is done for. Also true that about North Atlantic being kinda deadly for falling in. There's a damn good reason why, if there's a man over board situation, every singe ship that's nearby turns immediately towards the location. Even with a proper floating suit on a person lasts a few hours most.

YES PLEASE to the background story!!!

Mmm, true. Though I suppose it may depend on the Luonto a Finnish mage has? They can't walk on water the way Reynir and other Icelanders can, but Onni had no problem showing up in Reynir's Haven in owl form, so mages with bird Luontos might be able to alert people more easily. That said... either Onni needs to wake up, stat, to let them know they're walking (Taru and Trond should believe him, at least, even if Torbjörn and Siv won't?) or Reynir needs to go looking for a fellow Icelandic mage hopefully aboard the ship that he might alert to them still being alive.

Backstory, backstory, backstory! I have no doubt it'll be covered eventually, but... nowplease. D:D

We know that Lalli tried to contact Onni in the dreaming. Onni's physical location was too far away by then, so he was unsuccessful, but Lalli definitely knew what he was doing so it can't be a one time only -thing. I'm therefore guessing this is how mages contact the base while they're on field - they aren't too far away as long as they stay somewhat within the same area of Finland.

Luonto might indeed have effect on this though, in which case the above example shows that you only need one mage with a bird shaped luonto to contact another one in the dreamworld magechat. Maybe Finns make sure the base always has some mage/s with bird luonto, so they can rely on having someone who can contact the team on the field.

Okay, but sick, fever-flushed Sigrun is hot as fuck.

And hilarious, because can you be any more casual than that? Oh, that happens all the time, of course it does. Pff something tells me 99% percent of the time the people you lose contact with really are dead or worse.
